Undoing the Past: Nostalgia in James Joyce's Ulysses and Ian McEwen's Saturday - Dr. Teresa Winterhalter
By pairing James Joyce's Ulysses and Ian McEwen's Saturday, we will trace the particular structures of memory that guide Joyce's Leopold Bloom and McEwan's Henry Perowne through the ordeals of consciousness that erupt in their everyday lives. Marked in these novels by the events of World War I and 9/11, we will investigate the turmoil of a narrative where it emerges most often after the fact of profound loss or disappointment.
Dr. Winterhalter directs the Gender and Women's Studies program and is Professor of Victorian and Modern British literature at Armstrong. She has published several articles dealing with narrative technique and feminist ethics in such venues as Hypatia and Narrative. She has also co-authored articles that explore Hollywood adaptations of classic women's novels.
